It’s now one year since the first time I was contacted by Nancy, marketing manager of the company Zanotti, who was looking for an illustrator to make the company’s 2016 calendar. From the very beginning the project seemed very interesting: three years ago, Nancy has shifted the focus and the subject of calendars to children, and decided to support the Association Soleterre ONLUS supporting the “International Program of Pediatric Oncology”. The project intended to support the costs of the House of Hospitality “Akwaba” for children with cancer in Abidjan in ivory Coast who come from the poorest and distant areas.
Thus, from January 2015 I got the okay to start “work”. I was left free to interpret in my sense the project, with the only requirement to include children as protagonists. So, having to discard the two themes already used in previous years (places and animals) I thought I’d treat the products of the Earth. As well as they are collected or processed, they are some of the main ingredients of each table in the globe or decorative distinctive elements of specific globe areas.
Then, I have associated subjects with children and animals, trying to make sense, often surreal, of the image. I preferred seasoning months with surrealism and illogical to make them attractive not only for children but also for adults.
In about 6 months, the calendar has come to life, with 12 illustrations that feature sugar, cocoa, coffee, pink flamingos and snails as camels, goats and panda playing on snow. Each month has a dominant color, although all of them are deliberately delicate and ethereal.
Not to spoil the surprise for those who want to buy a calendar, I decided to post only a detail of each month, and some pictures of how it is closed and opened.
To give some more details I can say that is printed on matte paper, it is to hang and measures 35x70cm open.
